Bourbon Baggers Instructions

Instructions for Use

  1. Place a bourbon bagger at the bottom of your glass. Its okay if it doesn’t quite fit. In fact, that will help keep it in place as you sip!

  2. Pour over your favorite week night bourbon. Or, if you are feeling plucky, go ahead and pour the special occasion stuff.

  3. It will take about 5 minutes to get fully developed. But, you can help it along by occasionally swirling your glass like a bond villain.

  4. After the wait, your bourbon’s color will have deepened a bit more with the toasted baggers, and even more with the charred.

  5. Leave the Bourbon Bagger in your glass! as you sip and more time passes, it will get even better!

  6. Note the toasted finish and how the bourbon has smoothed out. Some people find that the bourbon also picks up some caramel and spice notes.

  7. You can reuse the Bourbon Bagger for the entirety of the night, but don't save overnight.

Hi, I’m Jay Kreusch, inventor and founder of Bourbon Baggers.

Welcome to our community of people who love bourbon and want to get the most out of it. This video will show you how to use bourbon baggers as well as give you some tips and tricks to get the most out of them.

Let’s begin by first telling you what a bourbon bagger is. A bourbon bagger is an ordinary teabag. But, it contains toasted or charred wood, usually oak, that will perform a rapid micro-aging of your bourbon or whiskey right in your glass in just a few minutes. Sometimes, this is called “barrel-finishing” or “double oaking” as well.

It is as simple to use as a teabag. Just place it in the bottom of a whiskey glass, and cover it with bourbon.

First tip… give it a swirl every minute or so. This helps the bourbon flow through the bag and work even more quickly.

After about 5 minutes, it will have a noticeable impact on your bourbon or whiskey. You will pick up complexity including a better nose, palate, and finish.

Second tip… Leave the bagger in your glass. The longer your bourbon soaks, the more developed and complex it will come. You can’t leave it in too long.

After you are done sipping your first round of bourbon, just pour more on top. Don’t worry about it wearing out or not being effective. It is more than potent enough to enhance more bourbon than you should be drinking in one night!

That’s it. It is as simple as that.

Now for some frequently asked questions:

First Question: “can I reuse the bourbon bagger?”

We really don’t recommend saving the bagger for next-day use. It can get a bit funky over time if not kept covered with bourbon.

Second Question: “What about ice?”

You can definitely use bourbon baggers with ice. There are two approached to this. One is to enhance your bourbon with the bagger, then remove it and add ice. However, you can also just use it as I previously showed you then put ice over it. If you do this, however, note that the cold of the ice does make it take a bit longer to work, so give it a few minutes extra time.

Third Question: “Can I use it in a whole bottle?”

Yes, you can transform an entire bottle of bourbon using bourbon baggers! Just roll up bourbon baggers like this, then insert it into the bottle. Use two for an entire bottle and 3 or 4 for a 1.75 liter “handle.” However, since there is so much bourbon, and you probably won’t be frequently swirling the whole bottle, it will take around 24 hours to start working. But, left in the bottle, it will only get better with time. After about 6-9 months it will stop adding more, but you can leave the bagger in the bottle as long as you’d like. Oh, and it does not need refrigeration.

Fourth Question: “Are they only for bourbon?

No, Bourbon baggers aren’t just for Bourbon. Okay, I know that’s what they are called. But trust me, give them a try with any type of whiskey including rye, scotch, Japanese, Canadian, or any other. Also try them with gold tequila, dark rum, cognac, or even wine - especially chardonnay and cabernet which often have a stronger oak profile. Some customers have even reported success with beer and mead. Basically, if it is aged in a wood barrel, bourbon baggers take it to the next level.

Fifth and final question: “Is there anything else I can do with them?”

Yes, you can use bourbon baggers for other things as well. On our website is a recipe to make barrel-finished simple syrup using our bourbon baggers. We also have a recipe to make homemade coffee liqueur. Go check it out. For our holiday cinnamon version, or our smoked oak version, these can also be used as fragrance sachets. With the cinnamon, you can put it in a saucepan with water, some orange rind, and cranberries and simmer over your lowest heat. Your whole room will be filled with holiday scents.
